Afternoon learning with the Métis

Definitions:
Métis means a person who self-identifies as Metis, is district from other aboriginal peoples, is of historic Metis Nation Ancestry and who is accepted by the Metis Nation.
Metis are included as one of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada under section 35 of the Constitution Act 1982, which read:
35. (1) the existing aboriginal and treaty rights of the aboriginal peoples of Canada are herby recognized and affirmed,
(2) in this Act, aboriginal peoples of Canada include the Indian, Inuit and Metis peoples of Canada
Metis Origins
⁃ the historic Metis emerged as a distinct people and nation on the plains of western North AMerica during the elate 1700s
⁃ They developed a culture that was not European nor First Nations but rather a fusion of the two cultures. Historians refer to this fusion as Ethnogenesis. The formation and development of an ethnic group
⁃ Active and passive through identity with the physical environment, cultural, and religious differences

Recognized Language: Michki

Disposition of the MEtis Nation
⁃ 1811 HBC granted land within the red river
⁃ 1816 armed conflict – battle of seven oaks (first time Metis flag was flown)
⁃ 1869 federal government acquired Roberts Land from HBC

⁃ 1869 Provision government under Louis Riel
⁃ 1870 Manitoba Act
⁃ 1.4 million acres for the Metis and their descendants

Had to go through the Scrip Land Claim Process

Education:
Canadian education system historically excluded Metis
⁃ Metis on road allowances were often ineligible to send children to schools because they did not pay property taxes
⁃ The legacy of colonial policies has left socio-economic impacts on Metis people today that create challenges to attaining post-secondary education.

Fostering cultural wellness for Metis by:
⁃ acknowledging and including Metis identity to promote healing, self acceptance and pride for Metis people
⁃ Learning about Metis identity is the first step to supporting cultural wellness
⁃ Build on what you have learned to learn more about Metis culture and identity
⁃ Ensure your classroom has visible representations of Metis culture and identity so Metis students can see themselves reflected in the learning environment
⁃ Use Metis resources to teach students about Metis culture and identity
⁃ Working together with Metis community members

Office on Marine… Symbols for Metis = red river cart; sash; flag?

My I Am From Poem
Use this template to draft your poem, and then write a final draft to share on blank paper.
I am from my timekeeper.
From Apple and Nike
I am from the Fraser and Pacific
Flowing , opaque , neither thirsty quenching.
(adjective) (adjective) (sensory detail)
I am from the canyon
Mountains unstable and steep until the valley.
I’m from travellers and not always/ever on time…
From Jim and Sandy
I’m from the educators and disruptors
From those who read and those who create
I’m from independent thought and belief
I’m from the interior
Revelling in pizza and food to-go
From the
Merging of American and Canadian families – settlers all
The moving around the province
Has made no one place our home, but everywhere our place.
