Day 54 (of 2024/25) and then things got better! Thank you @BIketani and @emilycarru

It’s been a tough week… and I can only empathize for our friends family… but, as always, life keeps on moving… sometimes cuz it has to – sometimes because it gets to… finally ‘got to’ get to a good moment,

though it didn’t start that way – my son and daughter were at my office door. They never come to see me at school – at least not during the day… so I knew something was up…

But it was because of an email from Emily Carr – the university named after the artist – a goal our Emily has had for awhile, but was afraid to ask… her applying was a big win for us (and her) in overcoming anxiety and depression… even though we all knew, much as we prepared her when she was goalie in soccer – it’s not always easy and you can do your best but sometimes there are other factors out of your control… Emily Carr accepts less than half who apply… it’s ‘competitive’. We were fully expecting some feedback for a second attempt – we know many who have gone to Emily Carr, and most on second+ applications – but our Emily was accepted!

She admitted she thought it would be an email with suggestions for next time, not a change of address for 2025… she didn’t let anyone proofread her entrance writings… one fun/embarrassing part for her is one of her writing pieces was about how Smosh’s Brennan Iketani influenced her – she loves Smosh, and how director Brennan has very serious photos that show the process that leads to the comedic Smosh – which I think helped her because she knows (and likes) to frame events in ‘strategic’ ways – but sometimes has a hard time describing the process… describing what he liked about Brennans work helped her articulate her process – a process refined in no small part to the digital media teacher who worked hard to help her reconnect to school post-COVID. The digital media teacher got her back into routine and enjoying life. But also pushed her to do work that then appeared in gallery shows and covers of publications… that was a big journey! And shows how Arts can be so powerful – even if they involve screens😜

She loves photography, but I don’t think she believed that could be her way back to school and work. Emily Carr alumni popped up all around her over the past while… helping in a film camp… working at a coffee shop/bakery… throughout our community.

Serendipity?

It’s important for kids to have educators rooting for them. Even kids of educators (maybe especially them…?) it’s one thing for a parent to be encouraging – but for her to have supporters from school… at work… through family… can’t wait to see what she does next! But now two in university… $cholarships haven’t been so important in a long time!😇😂
