Day 60 (of 2024/25) Thanksgiving… Friendsgiving…

Day 60 (of 2024/25) Thanksgiving… Friendsgiving…

Heard a sportstalk radio host walk back some comments slamming concepts like friendsgiving after his daughter kinda tricked him into hosting one and it was pretty positive. Even though in Canada we celebrate turkey themed Thanksgiving in October, the US version greatly influences us… from tv special to sports (so much football!) to deciding what not to talk about – it’s going to be hard for me to not bait some of my US family/friends into checking what their favourite part of project 2025 is…

But the focus can still be on the things we are thankful for. Grandma going well past the century mark… youngest getting into a prestigious art school… oldest preparing to apply for a phd… another blood test saying the markers that led to a cardiac event are still looking very positive… lots to be thinking thankful thoughts about.

And events can include who you chose / from family you have to friends you get! Sure, there’s sometimes (metaphorical and literal) lumps in the gravy, but that’s can just become another tradition as we cycle out of fall and into the winter season.  Black Friday sales and shopping are largely tied to the winter religious celebration that is becoming more commercial and secular in practice ~ for both better and worse depending on your point of view…

Today is a chance to reflect on the harvest – the seeds we have planted over the past year, without needing to do a countdown list (that can wait for New Years). What has blossomed and what needs extra care? Are goals changing? What “crops” are being planned for next year – are there fields you’ll leave alone for a year to recharge (more metaphors…)?

Enjoy the time of year. The earlier nights allowing for an earlier meal. Football in the background; or the Thanksgiving classic movie Planes Trains and Automobiles… in an age of streaming, things can be more personalized than ever before – so whether it is a family based Thanksgiving, a friends focused Friendsgiving or a Canadian “just another Thursday” – enjoy the day!
