Day 63 (of 2024/25) Challenges of Change
I’ve been having a few conversations with people about change… usually I like change, but recent changes that have been unpredictable and out of sequence have been tricky. Then a student I work with had a nice reflection they shared:
You’re absolutely right—change can indeed be uncomfortable, especially when traditions or long-standing practices are deeply embedded in an institution’s culture. However, I agree that periodic reviews are essential to ensure that practices remain relevant and beneficial. It’s interesting how resistance often stems from fear of the unknown or a desire for stability, but without change, schools risk stagnation and losing touch with the evolving needs of students and society. I think a balance between honouring tradition and embracing innovation is key if the focus remains on fostering growth and inclusivity.
I liked another conversation that pushed my thinking from not looking at change from a deficit novel, but as a resilience opportunity! Slight shift in thinking, but valuable to not sink into needing to doomscroll…
Change may not be comfortable, but I’ve always agreed that sometimes we gotta get comfortable being uncomfortable. Change happens and paradigms shift. Especially with a reminder from the latest Will Richardson manifesto reminding us that the system of schools we are using were not designed for today’s world… it seems that frequently when I get to pondering something about change, or the future of education, Will and the Big Question Institute are always right there with some more considerations to dream about!
