Day 75 (of 2024/25) #tEChursday look at #kwanzaa and online games to discover more
This year, I have shared online-based games for Christmas…

some Judaism themed online games to unpack some thoughts on Chanukkah…
and today sharing a bit more about Kwanzaa… these remain the big ‘end of December celebrations’ in my expanding PLN (I am hoping to find some Diwali inspired online tech games that work within ‘enterprise (school) wifi signals’ for next year) but I hope to share some more online activities to help introduce some annual celebrations those in our broader learning community celebrate…. I will note that I may make mistakes along the way, but I am coming from a direction of cultural appreciation, not appropriation (which is why I will wear Santa-themed ties, but not one tied to any formal religion – though I’m tempted by a lightup menorah bowtie…)
Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. One of the newer annual traditions as it was first celebrated in 1966 – also a reason it is not always acknowledged because of ageism… at least that’s the justification some will use (bias and discrimination hides in plain sight!) In fact, the founder Maulana Karenga said his goal was to “give black people an alternative to the existing holiday of Christmas (and it’s own dominating position in varied community centres) and give black people an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society.
More can be learned through Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwanzaa
Some online exploration gamified learning:
From digipuzzle: https://www.digipuzzle.net/education/kwanzaa/ though the majority are just Kwanzaa ‘themed’ variations of online puzzle games.
There are others on primary games, but not every enterprise wifi will let this site work: https://www.primarygames.com/holidays/kwanzaa/games/
And as much as I’m reluctant to artify any culture – there are some decent online colouring templates to play with here: https://artsandculture.google.com/experiment/MAFhZH7T44UquA
Hopefully more resources to share next festive season!
