Big thanks to www.blackexcellenceday.ca – a great group of educators who have worked to highlight some ideas and supports to highlight some of the amazing work done by a group of people that don’t often pop up in our older history books – or the old “Canada Heritage Minutes” such as this one on the Underground Railroad: https://youtu.be/DZStWWVqkh0?si=4yTKv_e2sJ3xtbuW or who was Viola Desmond: https://youtu.be/ie0xWYRSX7Y?si=aeZG50ri_SkbvaWi
But also how reliant we had (?) been on reusing limited shares – I have learned about and talked about Joe Fortes a lot… https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/joe-fortes-100-years-later-1.6337337
And next week (Day 84) is Black Excellence Day – and Burnaby School District (and Beth Applewhite and many many others) have done a great job preparing an assembly that will be broadcast ~ and I will be re-sharing with my online school community ~ along with a lot of great ideas as to how to immerse a school (community) into some thinking of Black Excellence. This year, I am doing a series of questions on my social medias prompting some thinking about who we think of with some key topics:
I started with: Who is your favourite black character in literature? I know that readers get engaged when they ‘see themselves’ in the characters they read – but I still connect with some characters like Alex Cross, but my OG was Othello – loved that play!
Others:
Favourite Author? Tiffany D Jackson and Jason Reynolds
Favourite Scientist? Neil Degrasse Tyson
Content Creator? Key and Peele – even did a little tribute to them: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMkfnCUKu/ based on their Mr Garvey series
Super Hero? As a big green lantern fan, I really like John Stewart
TV/Movie character? Alex Cross? Or is he better in print than on screen?
Musician?
Actor?
Artist?
Athlete?
Politician?
Etc
But Black Excellence Day is a week away… don’t wait until a day before to get thinkings going!
