Educational "Days of Learning" blog

Day 85 (of 2024/25) what can be removed from education…

I had some time to think while travelling to my grandmas mini memorial (100 years old!!) and saw a couple of articles that made me ponder… education does a lot… what could/should/ought to be deleted – especially as everybody has “more” that they wish schools did.

The first article was the acknowledgement that the Lowry Maraschino Cherry blossom is being discontinued. I love chocolate covered cherries and am always tempted by this one about every decade. I’m sticking with Queen Anne’s at Christmas time… I know some love it, but I’m a meh at best… https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7434513

And then another article pointed out how even menu items change over the years https://apple.news/AS1wsYybgQ4miMl3eIGfNow

Not that they won’t ever reappear (though I hope some don’t) but that they don’t always have to be offered.

Education has a lot of targets just now / especially in the humanities with books being targeted for banning; histories wanting to be omitted or have ‘just the good parts’ versions; science continues to struggle with religions; people think math is just about solving equations; etc

And with tech influence, Mayhaps we should be doing a lot more on critical analysis of medias and creating vs consuming content. The world continues to evolve and we are still dominated by classrooms with students in rows facing a “front” of the classroom… I don’t think Dewey would be impressed with how this experiment of school currently is…

But with so much possible to add to schooling – what could we remove (not physical education or recess breaks – if anything more Finnish 45/15 schedules!
