Day 108 (of 2024/25) gotta admit… I miss flash and still hate (but appreciate) firewalls – a #tEChursday reflection
I have a list of math games that used to be great – but there were definitely a lot more available via flash – and not as many blocked by our various firewalls due to them being ‘games’ – not whether or not they are useful —> which is always up for debate – I had a teacher call one of the games I shared to students ‘a complete waste of time’ (evidence was that the kids were gathered around playing it shouting encouragement and advice… which was part of the point of the game to introduce some collaboration components that are part of a coding mindset…
engineering.com has been a great resource over the years, but many of them don’t connect because of the nature of secure websites not liking them… but check them out as they have been a great resource of stem games! They’ve updated many of their previously flash-dependent games to work (depending on terms and conditions of your own wifi…) because for one person it’s a distraction for another it’s an introduction to the engineering needed to design an airplane… lots of curriculum able to be explored via game play!
Even my ‘arcade’ section https://technolandy.wordpress.com/arcade-classics/ only has a few games available in most school wifi zones – Pacman, Empire Strikes Back (Thanks Scratch!) but the others ‘as inspired by Ready Player One’ are fun to play outside of secure zones!
Even “isthisprime.com” gets the red scary screen….
Fortunately “Hourofcode.com” continues to work well!
But I just wanted a version of Deal or No Deal for a little math lesson on probability and statistics… and I didn’t want to go to an app… Glad I tested https://zone.msn.com/gameplayer/gameplayerHTML.aspx?game=dealornodeal&legacyUrl=false at school before going in front of a group of students…
What sites do you wish were better enabled at schools to help gamify some of the learning for/of/as/with students?
