Day 109 (of 2024/25) a reshare of #recreationalmathematics

A while back Dr Who made a throwaway comment about “recreational mathematics” – the joys of doing math for fun… imagine that!

So today I did a classroom takeover with the theme of seeing if this math thing would work or not!

I like to start with an old ‘magic eye’

A mathematical piece of art that could not be done without mathematics – can you see the 3D image??
Love this one as a way to help students think critically about how to narrow down the number of guesses… yes you ‘half’ to do it!
So many ways to blend hands on movement of manipulatives to help create equations!
And more fun – especially when students discover that there are multiple solutions – math is not just right/wrong!
I love just leaving this up for students to collaborate and work on…
And while I ranted about this game not being approved by the provincial firewall for online use – the app still helped students realize how to do some thinking about probability; and sharing that any/every lottery game is mathematically ‘not your friend’ – but I worry that provincial ministries won’t like that message being repeated frequently.

Love classroom takeovers – especially when we can get into some math… with the other preamble that I know for many math is stressful, and while I may lead you into a zone of frustration, I will not leave you there – we will work it out or end the program before it becomes ‘too much’. But frustration can be good to live with … just not for too long! And math is fun & beautiful & … a recreational activity!
