Day x (of 2024/25) #booktok Weirdo by Tony Weaver Jr, illustrated by Jes & Cindy Wibowo
Only thing better than a recommendation by Jason Reynolds to start a book is the gamification of school by referencing that “the first day of school is a tutorial level before you get to the game”… and the examples of “pro tips” that help show every school has its own secret rules…
One chapter in and I know I’m not going to stop until an external force interrupts my reading…. Or an education connection strikes:
Oooh great metaphor of people being more like gardens than plants in terms of conditions for growth…
Re bullying (and why during disputes I clarify that the target need not accept any apology offered…) “it’s not your responsibility to fix people that bring you harm”
Ugh… the feedback questioning “did you write this?” In a plagiarism tone…
The fomo of everyone else’s social media looking like everyone is always happy/doing great
Great tonal choices to reflect mood…🖤
And how not everyone looks forward to school…+
And sentiment I suspect from many… “only give him as much info as he needs…”
The power of “connection” within schools (yet also the reluctance to embrace something ‘new’)
And the power when you find your group (chat)!
And the mindset of “evolving” (sounds better than matriculating…)
Absolutely fabulous read about the benefits of being “weird” (or as my son liked to repeat: gotta be odd to be number one – a Seuss reference)
Don’t think “reading age” matters in this one – and is a book I will be repeatedly suggesting to others!!
Takes on topics of bullying, depression and self harm, but overall shows the power of self empowerment and …
Why
Embracing
Individuality
Radically
Defies
Obstacles
Thank you for sharing Tony!!
Fully recommending this book for everybody’s library -whether it’s a comic book library (as I have at my school….) or a more traditional library setup! And as it is April… it’s a great time to buy this book at a local independent book store…!
