Day 140 (of 2024/25) #autismmonth share! The complexity of “time”
Today’s reminders come from some reflecting I did during our Pro-D Day.
Wait Time. Don’t rush an answer… remember that with any question, the brain can get very busy. Very. It’s why I will continue to share this photo my son created – thousands of answers and very challenging to try to sort it to the ‘one best’ response…

And time becomes an oddity – what can feel like time going slowly for one can be over in a blink for another in the same space, doing the same activity. So modelling wait time can be important – “now that I’ve asked my question, I’m going to count to 100 in my head before I want anyone to be ready to share an answer – I also know that some need more than that time, so use the signal [crossed fingers] if you still need more time while we start sharing some thoughts” – this helps everyone know why the quiet time is happening – and for those whose neural pathways have rushed to an answer, they know it’s not an indefinite time, and for those sorting through a longer list of ‘possibilities’, they know it won’t go on forever either…
It also helps to show and model one way a brain can think and process… that it’s not always about speed (at least it shouldn’t be…) but about mindful application of a strategy…
Also why I say that if we want better readers/writers/mathers we need to be better role models. Ams likewise with use of personal devices and AI. Mindful use of the most valuable resource, but in different ways… time to show how and why I do what I do, so you can likewise do as I do, rather than as I wish… cuz time moves at different speeds – especially when in a state of flow and a lot of possibilities can ‘pop up’ when a question is asked… a dog barks… don’t be afraid to mindfully in-ask the weirdness if ‘time’.
