Day 143 (of 2024/25) #booktok the Cartoonists Club by Raina Telgemeier & Scott McCloud
Two of my favourites – Raina got my attention with Smile and Drama and I was guided to Scott with his graphic novel look at comics.
I love the opening looking at writing/drawing partnerships… I don’t imagine it’s ever ‘easy’.
And the ultimate reminder regarding terminology:

Ugh: “no comics on school nights” is/was NOT a promise I could make (or keep)
Lovely steps to show how to become a “comic pro”! And at this time one of my kids (20) saw the inside illustrations and commented “is that… it makes me want to reread drama and smile. Can I read it next?”
and I love when I can “hear” Scott’s influence of the story – Raina’s drawings, but Scott’s teaching of genre and comic types…🤣
And a good memoir booklist:

And a great reminder that you need to fail at things to get better (and find what you don’t want to do)
But an entertaining manual to get into creating comic book content!! Living this!
Perfect is for robots. Mistakes are where the people are.
Good look at copying. To practice is good. To pretend it’s yours- not. To make money off other peoples work – not. Parodies – good. Ripping off others – not
And note the many jobs in putting a comic together:

Wow. Want to explore the “creating” side of cookie books? This is the book for you. Want to get inspired to help understand students whom comic books are everything? This is the book for you. Fan of Raina or Scott? This is a fabulous collaboration!
Comics create community. Read a comic – it’s a great day to pick one up and explore because, secretly, today (April 28) is superhero day…
