Day 156 (of 2024/25) MooseHide Day
Are you fasting? This is one way to show support.
Are you walking? This is another way to show support.
Are you wearing a piece of MooseHide? This too is a way to show support.
Are you thinking about ‘why’ this day happens? On May 15th we come together to take a stand against violence towards women and children, in our journey to reconciliation.
The Moose Hide Campaign began as a BC-born Indigenous-led grassroots movement to engage men and boys in ending gender-based violence – violence agains women and children, and all those along the gender continuum. It has since grown into a nationwide movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians from local communities, First Nations, governments, schools, colleges/universities, police forces and many other organizations – all committed to taking action to end this violence.
Why? Despite awareness campaigns and ongoing education, more than 1000 physical or sexual assaults occur against women in BC each week.
Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16
A women or girl is murdered every two and a half days in Canada… and Indigenous women are killed at six times the rate of non-Indigenous women.
In 2014 a daily average of almost 8,000 women and children in Canada were staying in shelters because it was not safe at home.
As featured by exploring the Highway of Tears, there were 1,181 cases or missing or murdered Aboriginal women in Canada between 1980 and 2012… however, based on how many cases have not been explored/opened… it is likely closer to 4000.
