Day 158 (of 2024/25) #TCAF #booktok share: Ducks by Kate Beaton @kate.beaton @beatonna

Excited to be getting closer and closer to the Toronto Comic Art Festival ~ where I am excited to share the work I’ve done, and results I’ve seen to have a Comic Book library in my online school’s physical building in Powell River… and the expandingly popular Comic Con… a thing I don’t know why I didn’t figure out to do for my classroom or school earlier (actually I do – not everyone sees comics as a literary genre…).

As I’m getting ready, I am going to share on as many of the ‘main speakers’ presenting at TCAF as I can… I was particularly excited to hear Katie Beaton was going to be there – absolutely love Ducks; got my attention by a few other comic aficionados who described it as a story that ‘absolutely wrecked them’ – in a good way… well, as an English major ‘good way’.

Fabulous story of an Atlantic Canadian finding her way in the Albertan Oil Sands… but so much more of a commentary of gender bias, and regional stereotypes, and the lure of money… and the corners being cut in ‘the real world’. And the uncomfortable truth that the creeps encountered… are sons, uncles, fathers, brothers… What she says and draws is accentuated by what she doesn’t draw… the missed signs and what is said without being actually said… or drawn…

It is on my school Comic Book Library ‘top shelf’ – top for as one of the ‘must reads’ in comic/graphic novel lore, but gotta be of a certain age/height to access it.

I am excited to hear more from Kate… *I’ve got Shark Girl on order… new release that’s gotten good reviews…!
