Another of the First Round of Featured Guests coming to Toronto Comic Arts Festival, she has also written Adventures of Superhero Girl, Pumpkinheads, One Year at Ellsmere, and Ride on. But the most recent is Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy:
Nothing like peer pressure in sports – no matter what the gender… but good perspective to show the womens locker room. From my perspective, sports can be hard to capture in comic/graphic novels, but Hicks does this masterfully!
And great introductions to highlight how while many may say ‘sticks and stones…’ words can hurt a lot more than physical injury… and last longer…

Love the appearance of the BC essential: White Spot! (Hint: BC Burger – fries with side of the mayo & honey mustard)
Fabulous read on the complications of growing up – with assumptions and bias aplenty! Can’t wait for the sequel(s)!
In the meantime…
Adventures of Superhero Girl is likewise delightful… the angst of finding an arch nemesis… not choosing the powers you have and how frustrating it must be when you forget to take off your mask! Or forgetting sunscreen when the mask is on… a great perspective on being a superhero!
Also love how she shows/models the many many drawings that happen that don’t get published… practicing matters!
In short: I have become a big fan!
