Day 174(of 2024/25) #fathersday thinking

I always like to give shoutouts to dads (and the many people regardless of gender who do the ‘job’ of dads) as so often Mother’s Day gets a bit more attention in schools – because “we” so often work with moms more than dads… not always, I have more than a couple dads who are primary/only parents who do a great job. But I also know that dad-dynamics can lead to some tricky interactions…

There are some apt stereotypes I support:

  • Bad dad jokes (for Father’s Day, I got a new pen that can write underwater. It writes other words too…
  • Enjoying sports (the best reality-television, especially playoffs – faves include Mariners Seahawks and Canucks – no nba favourite until a team returns to the pacific north/south west – depends on if US or Canada perspective)
  • Still a kid (Soaceballs 2: the quest for more money was finally announced as actually happening despite being teased in the first movie!)
  • Loves a bargain (excited to go to our new Winners to find a deal today!) doesn’t mean I’m cheap, but I do let others select how much to tip…
  • Thinks about the Roman Empire (not every day, despite the meme/reddit shared – but as I majored in histor and classical studies, Rome was a foundation piece)
  • Explores books… (less of a trope nowadays but I do repeat the habit my dad had – book tv at the same time!) and multiple books at the same time…

Gotta remember that dads are complex. I still miss mine and it’s been 35 years since he passed… some have good relationships (that’s what my kids say) and many don’t… (dad issues are a real thing… and partly why the podcast Call Me Daddy is the most listened to right now… ps love the Unwell station on SiriusXM that Alex Cooper also hosts) and it’s why while I like to say and create things for Happy Fathers Day – I know that, much like summer vacation – this is a happier time for some and time they wish was not on the calendar for others… complex hypocrisy —> that’s education/school for ya!
