Day 183 (of 2024/25) a final #tEChursday thought/share for the school year thanks @lastweektonight
The last couple days, my social media included an emphasis on some AI generated images. This was inspired by John Oliver on Last Week Tonight’s look at AI slap – which I thought encapsulated a good overview of tech during the 24/25 school year.
The good – AI versatility – I love the variety of resources that AI is providing schools. Immediate feedback on reading (shoutout to Microsoft Learning Accelerators – Reading) the editing it helps with (esp just prompting ideas and letting me decide changes) as well as prompts and confirmations (does the image match what you wrote in words). It even help someone like me create images at the ability of my kids… and my dad – hmm maybe art ability skips a generation?
The bad – artificial creations vs human original created content. I like how I can create images I can see in my mind but not create with pen, pencil, or stylus… but if we rely on it too much, how does it impact influence and impede the creative process…?
The ugly : AI slap. Can you trust what you see? Should your default be to distrust the news you see? So much artificial imagery. John Oliver had some great shares on Last Week Tonight
This week I tried some AI slip on my social medias to see the reaction, and it wasn’t good. Views were down and the comments were more “what is this?” than anything positive. And my daughter (who attends an art specialist university) was definitely not a fan. It is reassuring to see that there is a vibe as to when to collaborate with AI and when not to…
But (the magic word that means disregard everything before this word) AI changes a lot about what we do in schools. The importance of “basics” such as words and numbers increases even more and the focus on the competencies (Communication, Thinking [creatively and critically}, and the Personal and Social realms) more than how long you can memorize facts and figures for. The transformational part when AI is blended with personal screens is that there is so much more/different(iated) that can be done now than even five years ago.
The future is gonna be interesting!!
