Bonus of summer (breaking news) Wow. Banning reading in Alberta
“libraries will also no longer be able to provide students in Grade 9 and below with any material that contains non-explicit sexual content, such as the depiction of bodies with references to genitalia, menstruation, puberty or romantic relationships, including handholding and kissing.”
I honestly don’t recall a fiction book that I have read in this years StoryGraph list (which includes some “children’s” literature titles) that would be allowed now.
Yeah 20/20 of the books I just looked at have some sort of relationship….
So many classic and great poems, stories and plays (and movies) have some sexual connotation – as relationships are so embedded in most “story themes”. But I guess no lore Shakespeare… or King… or Munsch and definitely no Atwood… or Orwell…hmmm. I really hope this gets a quick relook…
In thinking about this, Libraries (including in-class setups) are going to be sparse. Or don’t even risk it – worry about reading as an at-home project!
