Day 15 (of SOL 2025) Summer of Learning… Dear Dr @chrkennedy
In his annual year end blog, Chris had some good questions… here is question
15. What if extracurriculars were seen as essential, not extra?
Again. The Finnish model – and possibly an aid to our blending Child Care in to our Ministry of Education (and Child Care) – after learning lessons are done, then the extra/co-curricular activities being… but as part of school – now, that’s tricky for us in BC because we do not have a food program that can handle universal lunches, let alone 2 to 3 meals a day on top of learning. In our program (Provincial OnLine Learning School) we are embedding some activities during the day – this year we experimented with an asynchronous TaskMaster club and live Dungeons and Dragons club (parents of the 80s would be outraged!!) this next year, I am hoping to embed:
a movie monday activity?
TaskMaster Tuesday,
D&D Wednesday,
Chess Thursday (ooh -check that… Thursday murder club – group mysteries!!), and
Cartoonist Club on Fridays – as inspired by the book by Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud.
And as inspired by gamechanger – I think we should do an extra-err, co-curricular “course” where every class is different – in format and subject. Just working how to grant students credit for something….adst makes sense and i have a good one about “mazes” that works for every grade/age level.
