Day 37 (of SOL 2025) thinking of teachers contracts…

BCTF is working on a contract with government… I recently proposed an idea to take on concerning literacy trends with the not-research supported (cuz it’s too obvious) idea is hiding a LOT more librarians (https://technolandy.com/2025/07/31/day-31-of-sol-2025-literacy-scores-libraries-and-a-long-overdue-apology-for-the-learning-commons-mis-promotion/) like a full time person in addition to the current fte ratio (who helps cover prep time – which can continue) – which, along with a higher budget to buy new books will increase reading interest and scores (for those worried that those matter).

But thinking of the contract, one was just shared from 1923…

Love the colonial presumption that the teacher would be a ‘Miss’ (until they got fired/married…”)

Nothing much about pro-d time… or hours for prep… but a lot about looks (almost expected to read something about how “they should smile more….”

We’ve come a long ways in the education contacts (well – most jurisdictions have, I see some social media/news shares that I think would like to devolve back to this kind of contract – and not adjust the monthly wage…)

Re clothing: I know it must be real, but I could not imagine it: are there places in North America where teachers can’t wear jeans?? I know I’m an outlier wearing ties/bow ties (until the weather encourages shorts sandals and collared shirts – or tributes to #nerdytshirt Friday or any other trend that lets me wear my taskmaster or sports team shirts…)

Any thoughts on how to ask a superintendent for permission to go to Costco on the weekend (there isn’t one in our town). Can’t tell if this contract feels more religious or politically biased but if this is how they set things for the adults… how about the students?!?
