Educational "Days of Learning" blog

Day one-ish  (of 2025/26) — the days of learning blog continues… year 13

Day one-ish  (of 2025/26) — the days of learning blog continues… year 13

I appreciate West Vancouver superintendent @chrkennedy (cultureofyes.ca) pointing out a few years back that this daily blog was a bit of an ‘iron man’ streak… as a baseball rn, I was always in awe of the longevity of Orioles Cal Ripken Jr who managed 2632 consecutive games… my regular season (not things led ‘summer of learning which are more like pre/post season games) number going into this year is 2238 – so another 2 and a bit years to go…

I find the ‘daily reflection/synthesis’ helps me.

I do NOT encourage others to do this. Many have tried and abandoned it… you gotta have the right audience —> mine are my kids as I didn’t find my dads journals until much later in my journey – that others sometimes take a peek is a bonus… and has led me to practice some video shares to help spread the importance of inclusion, differentiation, and technologies to enhance the learning experience for all!

This year I am planning on doing some more theming…

Mondays are going to be mathematical…. With History Of Math being an accepted math credit for students entering university Humanities/Arts programs, I am going to try to hype this ‘good parts’ version of math with videos, links and a lot around Recreational Mathematics – and fair warning – if your BC school isn’t offering it, our Provincial Online Learning School are finding more and more success with it, and there’s no charge to cross enroll😇

Tuesday is going to likely have a new media theme (yep – putting together some PBL units for senior New Media English credits that are focused around authentic new media for consumption (comics…err graphic novels, digital media -YouTube as an anchor, exploring the others as the activity – and the one that’ll get the most raised eyebrows… video games – the sources of huge stories! Tuesday will also be our schools “cartoonist club” as inspired by the book by Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud – with a goal of having some students sell their own creations at this years school comic con! And lots of reminders about the importance of reading… and modelling reading!!

Wednesday is mindfully unthemed (so far…) through September having a reconciliation theme in our province will probably see me share some decolonizing inclusionary trends while I prepare for my online D&D club for students

#tEChursday (putting the tech – into Thursday learning – I used to draw it on the board as T(ec)hursday – but the #hashtag doesn’t like the parenthesis) is getting a refinement as I add AI, so yes, the hashtag will be: #tEChursdAI as we explore the advancement that is making traditional school even more unlike real life than ever before… wanna see disconnects? Rely on the blue exam books…

Friday is always a good time to scan the news and I’ll likely continue that theme or highlight some monthly themes that I’m thinking about… It is said a lot of news is put out on friday to avoid attention… I think I’ll give a little bit of attention – along with some periodic shares… I’m bubbling to do a blurb about the book bans in Alberta… but Margaret Atwood dropped the mike on that!

Year 13 – still trying to figure out what this is all about… I don’t encourage others to try it… but part of that is also my idea around the importance of having a nemesis… having someone to prove wrong! How do you reflect on your synthesis? I’m still exploring the various media!
