Day one-ish (of 2025/26) @ShaneSafir Pedagogies of Voice with @ejeducation (Saswan Jaber) @_crystalmwatson and @marlobagsik
Can’t wait to see some of the pushback as Safir continues to unravel a personalized approach to data and education that really hits at the bedrock of the system that works for most… many?… some…? But really wasn’t ever meant for universal learning… so maybe this is the push the system needs (I’ve been planting the seeds for an education relaunch on January 2030 to align school and yearly calendars…
So good to dig into topics like “success” (what it means and who sets the standards)
Equity. Participation. Inquiry. Verbal/NonVerbal cues. Feedback. Acknowledging that we are trying to use a system that was never designed for “all” provide universal education… and probably why many keep defaulting to tracks/streams/cohorts/platoons…
Using street data (artifacts narratives and observations) being even better than comparing achievement on standardized assessments for individual learning journeys.
Ooohs rethinking thoughts for sept blog:
Instead of a test when students are challenging a class – how about a “knowledge defence” with a panel (Principal, Teacher, Elder, Knowledge Keeper)?
Instead of a test when students are challenging a class – how about a “knowledge defence” with a panel (Principal, Teacher, Elder, Knowledge Keeper)?
Yeah, it just dropped July 29 — but if Street Data cracked open your lens on equity and learner voice, this one shatters the ceiling.
It’s bold. It’s uncomfortable. And it’s necessary.
This book reminds us: students already have a voice — even if it’s nonverbal. And we, as educators need to listen
If you think the system’s fine as-is, skip it – hope you also like the multiple choice test you have to complete to acknowledge you took part in pro-d to get your reimbursement…zzz. But if you believe education should awaken identity, belonging, inquiry, and efficacy — then grab a copy and let’s get loud.
(And yes, Shane Safir, Sawsan Jaber, Marlo Bagsik, Crystal Watson? Absolute 🔥)
I ranted on the toxins Shane and Sawsan share via some TikTo/Insta shares- but an acknowledgement that we all have trace elements of the toxins in our practice. I know even I got defensive during some parts of POV… but the best part is this was only one small part of the book!! A buffet awaits you as there is a LOT more in the book that years for you to read and synthesize!
