Day 32 (of 2025/26) 3 news stories from the week: inclusive education (thanks @thierck and @cbc ); Alberta’s teacher strike is resembling BCs past ones; Macleans takes a look at Ed too!
- Inclusive education is something I am a big fan of, but interesting to see it being brought up in a couple areas – BC Education author Tom Hierck had a timely “minute musing” https://x.com/thierck/status/1978939516993048597?s=46&t=1dUfyS3Gs8vfKZM2pkk0pQ and Yukon parents aren’t happy: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/parents-say-inclusive-education-in-the-yukon-is-lacking-they-want-the-next-government-to-change-that-9.6941138. I regularly point out that people love great stories in education, and inclusion… but nobody likes to pay what it costs… whether in early childhood education or into post-secondary… education is a service where it is hard to see the financial benefits… costly – but worth it when done right!
- Alberta government mandate https://teachers.ab.ca/news/premier-sets-out-education-mandate vs Red for Ed: https://www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/video/2025/10/16/thousands-rally-for-education-in-edmonton/ a challenge to not want to talk about class size and composition while there is a Supreme Court ruling out there (yep – a BC case) that any mediator is going to end up looking at for guidance… teacher contracts (like inclusive education) is costly when it is done right…
- As for me… did some work and learning with Metro Tech Educators (looking at the pros and cons of budgets, AI, evolutions of products from good to … less… eg Roblox – great building program, bad track record with predation – even my daughter recalls often being DM’d ‘wanna be my girlfriend’ but we talked a lot about this as a family); then a little visit back to UBC for walk down memory lane as remembrance for my old football coach passing away last week; then a bit of a positive end with a colleague gifting me some BC Lions tickets he couldn’t use… so I could take my father-in-law who loves CFL! Looking forward to next week’s Pro-D at CUEBC where a number of educators I connected with this week… will be sharing even more then!
