Day 78 (of 2025/26) A sonnet to reading (and the skills needed to be learned along the way)
An article that started me thinking… Is relevant reading the spark needed to shift
The role of learning to read to reading to learn?
https://www.dailydot.com/news/gamer-teachers-reddit-teens-read/
As I thought phonics and phonemic awareness were always taught…
Part of direct and indirect teaching and reinforcement
(Though I did like to work with my older readers with awry as a ree? Or a rye?)
But that’s because I take joy in reading…

But my goals in reading have long been … not about words per minute…
Nor how well I decode… Not even how well I can answer questions based on what was read
Though all of those useful things to consider…

Because I admittedly worry when the focus is on ‘reading to learn’
When there needs to be a joy in the skill to amplify ‘learning to read’…

It’s all so confusing, teaching and learning to read ain’t always easy (and not everyone translates text into images in the brain)
Slow down. Model more. Read aloud. Teach letters. Teach blends. Teach words. Teach compound words. Enjoy the process…

Big thanks to the book “I will judge you by your bookshelf” by Grant Snider
