I know some teachers worry that verse novels don’t demand sustained attention…

or enough rigorous reading

(Which usually tells me they haven’t read much Milton.)

But the verse here isn’t decorative.

It moves like basketball.

Short passes.

Hard beats.

Momentum.

Even if not in iambic pentameter.\

This isn’t a shortcut into literacy.

It’s an on-ramp.

And I love that it’s part of our district’s Book it to Brooks reading challenge encouraging students to gear up for in-person high school with a book that actually gets read!
