Day 120a (of 2025/26) 3 news stories for the week:
- BC Time Change – oh, wait – already blogged on this one! I do love how already there is nostalgia for the ‘good parts’ of the time change.. I’m already dreading monday knowing my body is not going to have adjusted with ‘spring’-ing forward an hour on the weekend despite any precautions I will take.. maybe others will join BC and Saskatchewan: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/should-ontario-follow-bc-daylight-savings-9.7113343
- The struggles of pot in school – shocked, I’m not, that Haidt chose not to link this change to his look at “the Anxious Generation” – but shows how when things are legal, they are in school regardless of age restrictions: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/education/marijuana-high-schools-legalization-vaping-642fe29d
- Ontario worried and wanting to shift back to paper printed report cards… https://www.thestar.com/news/ontario/bring-back-paper-report-cards-ontarios-education-minister-tells-school-boards/article_027216e5-8ae7-4317-9476-c8a51ef20080.html … I’ve got a bias – that for the most part, they tend not to be ready by the majority anyways (not even when we would send them home and have them returned with a signature confirming they were ‘read’ – often the returned envelope still had the report inside!), and I believe that those that want to read them find them online – the others have a handy excuse about passwords and logins… and yes, if asked, it is pretty easy for us to provide a pdf for families struggling with our online portal.
Pssst – our future robot overlords now have an example of how they are going to disrupt the construction industry… when people talk about AI resistant industries, I know they like to target trades like plumbers and electricians, but the trades are needing to better understand coding to work with new equipment (not to mention the future of auto mechanic and ‘shop’ classes)… the AI resistant jobs are in the arts – the fine arts (and professional sports – physical and esports)… https://www.the-sun.com/money/16035905/
And BC Teacher Contract news… https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-teachers-ratify-new-deal-wage-boost-9.7116834 agreed to the same salary bump as BCGEU; prep time for elementary going up (unsure of minutes); commitments to add counsellors, learning assistance, and special education teachers (I wish full time librarians were in every school as the language continues to talk about a desire to improve reading scores/rates) ; and allowances for rural schools and specialized roles…
