Day 126 (of 2025/26) fasting in schools? Easter observance? Religious items in school…
I have long been an advocatefan of being more critical of systemic religious bias in schools, but that’s has always been regarding the system, not the individual. I have had students and staff where a variety of religious items – yes, crosses on necklaces and clothing that is of a religious connection… and never has it been a concern as inclusion means all are welcome, even if some iconography is worn to try to provoke a reaction (several heavy metal shirts…) – as long as we aren’t excluding…
So I’m of mixed minds with Quebec pushing hard for no religious iconography: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ceqw5j5lx32o
Part of me celebrates secularism. A big part. But I try to keep my religious bias limited to: all are welcome.
I just wish our system did likewise…
Just noting that we went into spring break still putting out lots of food baskets and lunches during Ramadan, but are taking days to close schools for easter… or as I tease: a long weekend to acknowledge the subtle state-preferred religion.
I’ve definitely pivoted to raising awareness of the bias that we promote when only some holiday/events are acknowledged in school, but also how narrow the edge is between cultural appreciation and appropriation when it comes to recognizing and celebrating any religious expression (from Diwali to Passover to Ramadan) and the. Even wondering if it should “only” be the main religions that get acknowledged – noting that Jedi and Pastafarians are both rising in numbers.
But is it just doing a better job of embedding systemic discrimination if we “end” some events like Halloween but instead host “spirit days/weeks” in which costumes (or orange and black) are worn? Winter concerts that aren’t “christmas concerts” in name only? Or does it depend on the school community – but even then does it have to be 100%? I hate when certain families “keep kids home for a week or so” to avoid certain iconography – it makes me not enjoy assemblies when they stay out until after anthems are played…
We can’t pretend schooling isn’t complicated enough without also taking a look at some of these expectations that perpetuate promoting “some” over others.
In the meantime I will continue to balance hypocrisy and appreciation through my bow ties which I try to tie in with key days of the year – missing some admittedly, but trying to do better each year… what are your thoughts – cuz hiding eggs is fun, but it also promotes “one” even if the practice tried to be about “fun”. Sigh – over thinking ain’t always easy.
