Day 128a (of 2025/26) Graphic Novel Recommendation of the Month: InBetweens by Faith Erin Hicks @faitherinhicks
First, I love that I shared the cover with my comic book librarian daughter this past weekend when I picked up the book, and she cursed me because it isn’t supposed to be on bookshelves until (checking calendar) today! How I got a copy for my schools comic book library (no librarian, other than me pushing comic books and graphic novels more than ever before) I’ll keep confidential. I’m sure it was a lapse of a bookstore who got the box and didn’t note the ‘shelf date’ (having worked in a bigger book store, it happens more than anyone would want to officially answer).
And it is another delightful Faith Erin Hicks writing – I was a big fan of Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy (not just because of its west coast setting…) when I saw it, and her, at last June’s Toronto Comics Art Festival, and maybe I can convince her to make an appearance at one of our Provincial Online Learning School’s Comic Cons!
A great read showing how expectations are not always achieved, and at the same time leading me to further wonder if, on ones learning journey and growing in general, one needs a nemesis. Are passions to be nurtured? Or slotted into a career path?

It was a book that I found enjoyable to go through – I was able to make connections with the characters and their conflicts, and still appreciate the emphasis that this took place in 1999 (but NOT a true memoir… ) so that the would be a pause in terms of “a google search might help…”
Where do individuals fit in within relationships…
How much do we follow a best friends passions, even when we realize it isn’t necessarily ours (love this via geniushour in schools)…
How much nurturing and struggling does one need…
Not that there are any clear answers to these, but Faith has a fabulous way of bringing these questions out as the reader should be able to reflect on their own pathway and ponder … “is this the right path for me?” and be okay with making edits along the journey…
Glad that InBetweens is now on our school comic book library shelf!
