Day 17 (of 2025/26) #2slgbtqia+ history month
The time of month that gets some negative emails sent to me
Aggressive social media posts wondering why I will be wearing rainbow bow ties
Pride inclusion neck ties
Reminding people that all are welcome at our school with the pride inclusion flag in the background
.
It is 2slgbtqia+ history month,
Though I still sometimes revert to lgbq2oa+ month as the legacy of lgb to lgbt was a challenging mondshift even when I went to university.
.
The history has long been about fighting for inclusion
.
Gender segregation is a long standing exclusion model
.
Women. Children
.
People get opinionated quickly.
And love to rush to hyperbole.
.
Even now there is debate about using the organizer 2slgbtqia+ within the community.
.
I’m listening.
I’m learning.
I’m curious.
.
Cuz I hear outsiders say things like
“Don’t teach gender or sex stuff to students”
But still want gender isolated bathrooms and sports teams.
.
I freely admit that I’m looking forward to a couple decades from now
When we laugh
And wonder what the fuss was all about
.
Much like who can get married
Spoiler – two people who want a formal commitment to each other.
Should, could “two” be the limitation?
It is for me
.
I hope nobody cares too much about my relationship status.
.
And that’s the big picture right now.
We need to remind people of the history of 2slgbtqia+
It’s not a new phenomena
our global community has included people who love in a variety of ways
since time immemorial
Love who you love.
.
3 recent shares:
1969.
Not ancient history.
People were being criminalized in Canada for who they loved mere decades ago.
That is our history.
Though prosecution across social media
And appeals to add persecutions in real law codes
Continues to be sought in (too) many areas.
Decriminalized in Canada with Bill C-150 in 1969.
.
1971.
People marched for rights.
Some people undoubtedly thought
they were pushing too far.
History has a funny way
of making yesterday’s radical
look pretty ordinary.
The first “We Demand” rally for gay rights was held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 1971.
.
2005.
Same-sex marriage became legal across Canada.
Twenty-one years ago.
And now?
Two people who love each other
getting married
doesn’t seem particularly revolutionary.
Maybe that’s the point.
But 2005, Canada became one of the first countries in the world to legalize marriage for all.
.
History reminds us that
what feels controversial today
can become ordinary tomorrow.
So maybe the question isn’t
“Why do we have to talk about this?”
Maybe it’s:
“What are we going to look back on
twenty years from now
and wonder why we were so worried about it?”
.
.
Other notes:
1990, the term “Two Spirits” was coined in Winnipeg to honour traditional indigenous gender diverse identities
1992, the Department of National Defence ended the ban on 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals serving in the military
1996, sexual orientation was officially added to the Canadian Human Rights Act
2026? Let’s make some good 2SLGBTQIA+ history this month!
