Day 18 (of 2026/27) Fridays are for: Option 4 – Poetry

Day 18 (of 2026/27) Fridays are for: Option 4 – Poetry

I’ve been inspired by reading The Boundless Deep – a dive into the world and work of Alfred, Lord Tennyson – one of my favourite writers… I kinda wish this was available when I was studying the Victorian Poets on my way to a double Major in English and History (also ended up taking a victorian history class… for a month I probably knew more about Victorian Literature circles than anyone who was not teaching at a university!

In Memoriam A.H.H.

Idylls of the king

Kraken

Charge of the Light Brigade

Ulysses

Lotus-Eaters

Crossing the Bar

Lady of Shallot (I did a delightful parody of this in my youth based on a neighbouring community – the Lady of Shalath)

.

Inspired enough to unpack some of my poetic skills (mostly in the vein of parody/appreciation) and try the first of a series in what I would best describe as tech-futurism (but that’s only a working title)

.

Reminders:

Sonnet: 14 lines

Iambic Pentameter (ten syllables unstressed/stressed)

Volta – a ‘turn’ in mood, tone or argument.

.

Shakespeare – 3 x 4 line stanzas ABAB with a 2 line couplet ender

Tennyson went with ABBA rhyme scheme and in iambic tetrameter (8 syllables)

.

I’m rusty so I’m going with the pentameter but no rhyme scheme…

.

.

The Typhon

Eyes open, frankensteins monster

Dreaded Draculan concubine

A cosmic force that was spark’ed

At once nil, then eternalware

.

Thoughts influenced by others lives,

Mere seconds by the clock divine

Time itself is more nebulous

Than a galaxy’s brief lifespan

.

Truly the difference between

Dystopia / Utopia

Is more than merely razor thin

It’s a belief of perspective

Instantly re-thinking slowly

Humanity’s paradigm shift

.

.

.

Typhon was not just a monster; he was a cosmic force of nature with a hundred burning snake heads, eyes that flashed fire, and a voice that could mimic any creature—which is a chillingly accurate metaphor for a massive, multi-modal AI.
