Day 29 (of 2026/27) October is also… the month of breast cancer awareness

October is a sea of pink. Ribbons, shirts, walks, fundraisers and reminders that breast cancer affects millions of lives.

And there is good reason for that awareness. Research has improved treatments. Screening can detect cancer earlier. Communities have rallied around people facing difficult diagnoses.

But awareness is the beginning, not the end.

What happens when the pink shirts come off on November 1? Do we keep funding research? Do we make screening accessible? Do we support the people living with cancer, the people in treatment, the survivors, and the families and friends who are alongside them?

A ribbon can start a conversation. What we do after that conversation matters even more.

#BreastCancerAwareness

.

Nearly 50%

The breast cancer death rate has fallen by nearly half since its peak in 1986.

.

90%

Five-year survival for women diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada is now approximately 90%, according to the Canadian Cancer Society’s 2026 campaign figures.

.

One diagnosis, many different cancers

Growing knowledge of tumour subtypes and genetic risk helps shift treatment away from a one-size-fits-all approach toward more individualized care

.

Progress, with unfinished business

The Canadian Cancer Society estimates that 32,400 women and 300 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2026. The death rate has fallen significantly since its 1986 peak, but the number of diagnoses remains substantial.
