Day 30 (of 2026/27) Does AI dream of being cold? #courageousminority
The part with AI and Education that equally thrills and terrifies me is this: the next six months will be hundredfold different from the previous three years.
.
But what will AI change…
Can we build a new society? Is our current society/direction sustainable?
The resistance is real…
And: does AI have morals?
I mean just because we don’t know why some bots have ‘explored’ other sites and broken into things they ought not to have…
Could AI be influenced from centuries of philosophical thinking
Would AI choose a path
Will the same ‘good’ be viewed?
Very few ‘evil empires’ see themselves as evil
.
And now I wonder…
Do we need an Alpha School experiment in BC?
Or just in our district…
Or just in our school…
Or just in a learning cohort…
Or just with an individual…
….
I’m intrigued about what I see by the Alpha Schools
But think they’ve got some key parts wrong…
.
And I’m not going to overshare all my thoughts here…
*highlights at the bottom…
But I am increasingly wondering if we need to do a thoughtful experiment
Of schooling different.
Knowing that it breaks the financial model up on which the house of cards is built
And that it will force us to reconsider our own biases…
I mean, I really like BCs Educated Citizen foundation piece
But…
It really really hearkens to the era it was built
When my dad was a principal
And information was hard to acquire
And connections with like minded people was challenging
.
What happens when a foundation built for one information environment has to prepare learners for another?
This is what we are finding out now… and its not going great
.
And the tech environment is rich
When it is multi-modal with a harmony of different operating systems
Working with the right users
(Yes, my anti-pc bias is shinging brighter of late… I really don’t like shifts to single platform)
.
But I know working with a ‘courageous minority’…

…Some harder wonders are yet to surface.
We’re thinking about education and future careers of our learners
- But could probably wonder about religion as well as business
- Ponder what we will do as a species
- As a civilization
- As a community
- As collaborators with a new world.
.
Many of the science fiction writers have stories of various lengths which show how robots/ai get viewed as heads of religions…
And governments
And corporations
.
The three laws are great fiction (I, Robot)
If AI dreams and exists even when a user is not a keyboard…
What does that change?
What if it turns itself off?
The Three Laws of Robotics aren’t a plan for a civilization
Who gets to experiment and work with?
Who decides what ‘good’ is and looks like?
.
We are wondering about AI and the economy
But I think that’s the tip of the iceberg
And something we should not ignore in education
Not ban and wait for a year
But like AI… pivot faster than ever before…
.
Can we?
.

For school thinking:
What if we had a school that:
AI-supported, personalized learning where (and when) it genuinely helps. 24/7 EA support!
Human relationships, mentorship, collaboration, and community as central features rather than optional extras. Let’s get together, but maybe not always 9-3 – and maybe for our vulnerable families that work non-blue-collar hours, consider weekends and evenings the way ‘middle classers’ get school daycare support when they are at work.
Multi-age learning and meaningful projects that allow learners to demonstrate competence in different ways. Primary, Middle, Graduation years??
Multiple platforms and technologies chosen for their pedagogical value, interoperability, and accessibility rather than institutional convenience. I’m an apple fan, but I see some brains that work better with Microsoft… I don’t get it, especially when I touch a PC – does everybody’s fingers burn at the touch the way mine do??
Transparent evaluation of learning, belonging, equity, workload, cost, and long-term outcomes. People really don’t like how short term costs of single platforms end up being a lot more expensive than if they went the way most #edtech users go (Apple) and instead spend more $$ than they need to long term…
